KIRJO AQUA

Paint for sheet-iron roofs

  • Corrosion protective
  • Water-borne

Water-borne acrylate-based paint with anticorrosive pigmentation for sheet-iron roofs. Finish: matt.

Use: For new unpainted zinc coated/galvanized sheet-iron and steel surfaces. KIRJO AQUA can be applied to a new sheet-iron roof as soon as the roof is completed. Suitable also for maintenance painting of sheet-iron roofs which are previously painted with alkyd or acrylate paints. KIRJO AQUA can also be used for maintenance painting of industrially paint coated sheet steel: polyurethane, PURAL, PUREX, polyester, acrylic and PVC-Plastisol coatings. Maintenance painting of other coatings is done in accordance with instructions given by the steel manufacturer.

Surface preparation

GALVANIZED SHEET-IRON ROOFS AND OTHER UNPAINTED GALVANIZED SURFACES: A new sheet-iron roof can be painted as soon as it is completed. This is an advantage particularly in urban climate as the unpainted iron-sheets do not get dirty prior to painting. Wash galvanized surfaces before painting with RENSA STEEL washing agent for galvanized surfaces according to the instructions for use and rinse thoroughly with fresh water. NOTE! Cleaning agent must not dry onto the surface to be painted. Remove possible rust by e.g. steel brush. MAINTENANCE PAINTING: Remove all flaky and poorly adherent old paint as well as rust by scraping, by steel brush and/or by a machine. If the whole paint coat is, or can be assumed to be poorly adherent (e.g. paint is flaking in many areas), the paint is removed by mechanical methods or with paint remover. Bitumen paints and tars are removed totally before painting with KIRJO AQUA. The surface is washed with RENSA ROOF roof wash (diluted 1 part detergent : 3 parts water) and rinsed with fresh water. NOTE! Cleaning agent must not dry onto the surface to be painted. MAINTENANCE PAINTING, industrially coated sheet steel - polyurethane, PURAL, PUREX, polyester, acrylic and PVC-Plastisol coatings: The type of the old coating and the suitability of KIRJO AQUA for its maintenance painting must be defined before painting. Maintenance painting of other industrial coatings (e.g. PVDF) is done in accordance with instructions given by the steel manufacturer. If there are doubts about the suitability and adhesion, these are to be ensured by test painting. The condition of the industrial coating and its adhesion to the sheet steel must be evaluated carefully. If the old coating is badly damaged, weathered/chalked, cracking or peeling from large areas, it must be completely removed before painting with KIRJO AQUA. Peeling of old, poorly adherent coating cannot be stopped by maintenance painting.

Application

Stir thoroughly before use. Dilute the product 5 - 15 % by volume by water, when required. NEW UNPAINTED SURFACES: Apply the paint by brush, so called roof brush or airless spray. When applied by a brush, apply the paint twice to a dry film thickness of 2 x 40 µm. When spray painting the total film thickness of 80 µm (wet film abt. 210 µm) may be applied as a single coat. Recommended nozzle for airless spray is 0.015 - 0.019". MAINTENANCE PAINTING: Bare, rust-free sheet-iron surfaces of the cleaned, damaged areas are touched up with KIRJO AQUA. Very rusty, cleaned steel surfaces are primed with FERREX AQUA Anticorrosive Paint. The whole roof is then painted with KIRJO AQUA to a dry film thickness of 40 µm. Two coats are recommended only if the colour of the roof is changed.

Application conditions

The surface to be treated must be dry. During the application and drying period (note also the temperature of the night following the application) the temperature of the ambient air, the surface and the product shall be above +10°C and the relative air humidity below 80%. If the temperature of the surface to be painted exceeds +40°C, the application properties and the adhesion of the paint deteriorate. The temperature of the surface must not be over +40°C, or the water in the product may evaporate too quickly, pores may be formed to the paint film, adhesion may get worse or bubbles may appear.
