Teknos now offers the unique leading edge protection coating TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000-20 in a new white version with further improved resistance and smarter application. The innovative solution makes leading edge repair six times faster compared to traditional systems.

Globally, tens of thousands of rotor blades are in need for repair. Reducing operational impairments to a minimum requires a repair solution that is easy, fast and safe to apply even under adverse conditions on site. Teknos has developed leading edge protection coating TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 for exactly these requirements. This innovative, sustainable solution is now available as a new, enhanced version TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000-20 in white, with considerably improved rain erosion test (RET) results and an improved application system.

Six times more productive leading edge protection coating

Traditional leading edge repair systems typically consist of three coats (primer, filling and topcoat). By contrast, TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 is an elastomeric-based high-build coating with 100% solids content. In a single coat it forms a protective, elastic layer with a thickness of up to 2.500 µm. Moreover, it is extremely fast and cures in a couple of minutes, compared to approximately two hours with traditional systems. As a result the leading edge can be repaired in just one step without additional priming or filling, which delivers a considerable impact on time-savings.

The practical benefit is substantial. While it takes about two days to repair a blade with a traditional system, TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 makes it possible to repair three blades in one single day - six times faster. At the end of the day repair contractors benefit from much more productive repairs and plant operators from significantly reduced downtimes.

A wider application window further adds to productivity. Unlike traditional repair systems, TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 can be applied at temperatures as low as 5°C, and thus enables a larger application window especially for offshore use, with more repair days in spring and autumn.

RET results improved further

TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 is highly resistant and enables a long-standing protection of leading edges. Due to its special elasticity, the elastomeric layer can absorb high energies in collision with objects. The resistance of the new white version TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000-20 has been further improved and shows even better results in rain erosion tests (RET). After extended time, leading edges coated with TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000-20 show no erosion at all below 120 m/s and very minor local erosion only at 130 m/s. Under standardised test conditions according to DNVGL-RP-0171_2018 they withstand the exposure at 130 m/s speed for more than 10 hours, clearly longer than conventional coating systems on rotor blades. This protection is long lasting. After accelerated UV-light aging the edges withstand defined impact 270 minutes, longer than required by DNVGL. All in all TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 offers increased resistance and protection, thus enabling a longer service life with reduced downtime and higher turbine productivity.

Manually, the product is applied using a battery powered caulking gun and a unique spatula that has been further optimised with the new product version. The new design ensures the uniformity of the layer thickness and serves as a wind shield during application. Quality assurance is easy. As TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 cures very fast, both layer thickness and hardness according to Shore A can be measured on site at once.

TEKNOBLADE REPAIR 9000 has 100% solids content, is solvent-free, and contains no volatile organic components (VOC). It is more sustainable that traditional repair systems and enables safe application with minimal personal protective equipment (PPE) required. The safety of on-site application is further enhanced by the easy handling of the solution.
