Tradition as well as modern substrates

Sash windows, traditionally made for historical buildings, are as typical for the British window market as is the early adoption of the Accoya substrate. Two examples show that Teknos UK is successful in both fields.

Glenbruach House in Brig o’ Turk near Stirling (Scotland) is a historical Victorian building from 1875. John McLeods Principal Contractors replaced 90 sash and casement windows, together with refurbishment of the grand entrance porch.

"We are very much a traditional joinery company using age-old methods", says John McLeod. "Glenbruach House’s windows were traditionally made and fitted with all internal original panels and mouldings being reinstated."

John McLeods Principal Contractors manufactured all the windows in Meranti hardwood and pre-finished them in white using Teknos AQUA PRIMER 2907 and AQUATOP 2600-23 topcoat. They also refurbished the porch, using Teknos’ colour scanning technology to successfully colour match existing coatings on the property.

The homeowners were delighted with the results, and so were McLeods with the support from Teknos and with Teknos products. "Teknos paint coverage is great and the quality of finish when sprayed is exceptional", says John McLeod. "Drying times are really good which increases production. We have also used the brushing product which is equally good."

The joinery business is doing so well that McLeods are building a larger workshop with fully equipped spraying facilities. They know that Teknos will be supporting them the whole way with invaluable help and advice.

Pioneer project provides ten years experience with Accoya

NHS Victoria Hospital in Deal, Kent, was the first commercial use of Accoya in the UK. The hospital building has 194 sliding sash windows manufactured and coated by joiners Dempsey Dyer using Teknos paint.

"The project was completed in two stages", explains Peter Dyer, Managing Director Dempsey Dyer. "The first was 103 sash windows to replace an assortment of old wooden and UPVC windows. The NHS were so impressed with the results, that two years later they commissioned a further 91 sash windows with the same specifications."

The windows were coated in Teknos ANTISTAIN AQUA 2901, then painted in Teknos AQUATOP 2600 opaque top coat in Clean White Gloss.

Despite 10 years of exposure to the elements, these windows today are still in first-rate condition. Not a single one has failed, even at the vulnerable joint positions, indicating that the combination of Teknos coatings with Accoya timber has successfully protected the windows from rot caused by bacteria, mould and UV. The finish still looks fresh, keeping the building looking smart and maintaining the paintwork a breeze.

The combination of Teknos coatings on Accoya timber has proven to be a highly successful solution at NHS Victoria Hospital, and many examples followed this pioneer project, especially in the UK.
