NCS - An international way of communicating with colours

NCS – Natural Colour System® is a logical colour system based on how humans see colours. The colour system allows accurate cross-industrial colour communication for designers and manufacturers, retailers and customers. All Teknos paints can be tinted according to NCS colours.

ELEMENTARY COLOURS

The Natural Colour System is based on the six elementary colours white, black, yellow, red, blue and green (W, S, Y, R, B, G)

COLOUR SPACE

All colours have a place in this three-dimensional model.

COLOUR CIRCLE

The NCS Colour Circle is a horizontal section through the middle of the colour space.

NCS NOTATION

The colour NCS S 1070-Y10R has the nuance 1070, i.e. 10% in blackness and 70% in chromaticness. The hue of the colour is in this case a yellow (Y) colour with 10% redness (R).

NCS COLOUR TRIANGLE

The NCS Colour Triangle is a vertical section through the colour space. For each hue in the NCS Colour Circle, there is one
NCS Colour Triangle.

HOW TO CREATE COLOUR HARMONIES BY USING NCS

The NCS colour code is quite handy when it comes to creating colour harmonies. Just choose the colour by using the same hue, chromaticness, etc.

HUE

Create colour harmonies by using the same hue e.g. -Y10R. Just change the amount of whiteness, blackness and chromaticness.

NUANCE

Choose the same nuance (e.g. S 2040-) and create lovely colour harmonies on accent walls in different colours.

BLACKNESS

Same amount of blackness in the colour (e.g. S 20__-), also creates a beautiful harmony.

Chromaticness

By keeping the chromaticness of the colour (e.g. S __40-) the same, the strength of the colour repeats in each of them.

WHITENESS

Also by keeping the same amount af white in all the chosen colours, creating harmonies is easy (100% -blackness%-chromaticness% = whiteness)
