5 COMMON MYTHS ABOUT EXTERIOR PAINTING – AND WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW

Exterior painting can seem simple, until the result doesn’t last or meet expectations. Here are five common myths that can cost you time, money, and effort—and how to get it right.

1. “Just apply paint over it”

Reality: Surface preparation makes the difference

It’s tempting to take shortcuts—applying a fresh coat over an old surface can quickly make things look neat. But if the surface is dirty, dusty, or flaking, the paint won’t adhere properly. The coating will start to peel prematurely, and the finish will quickly deteriorate.

Often, this leads to doing the job twice: first removing the failing paint, then completing the prep work that should have been done from the start.

Proper preparation is the foundation of a durable paint job.

2. “Perfect colour = perfect result”

Reality: Protection is what matters

It’s easy to focus on colour and how the surface looks right after painting. But even the perfect shade won’t guarantee long-lasting results.

Exterior surfaces are constantly exposed to UV radiation, moisture, and temperature changes. Only a sufficiently thick, well-formed paint film can protect against these stresses.

A thin coat may look good at first, but it doesn’t protect the surface properly. The finish wears out quickly, and you’ll need to repaint sooner than expected.

The real question is: are you painting just for colour or for long-term protection?

Colour alone isn’t enough—the paint must protect.

3. “All paints are the same”

Reality: The right paint for the right job

Not all paints are created equal, and they’re not meant for the same applications.

Wooden façades expand and contract with moisture and temperature changes. The paint must be breathable enough to let moisture escape, yet protective enough to withstand harsh weather.

Using the wrong type of paint can trap moisture or wear out too quickly, compromising both appearance and durability.

The right product ensures a long-lasting result.

4. “What about the weather? Let’s just paint.”

Reality: Weather can ruin the job in an instant

Fresh paint is highly sensitive to weather conditions. If it rains before the paint has dried, you may see streaks, stains, or other visible defects. In the worst case, the paint can wash off before forming a proper protective layer.

High humidity and low temperatures slow down drying and can weaken durability. On the other hand, direct sunlight can cause the paint to dry too quickly, leading to uneven results and poor adhesion.

The right conditions are part of a successful paint job.

5. “You can just brush on a wood stain”

Reality: Technique defines the result

With translucent wood stains, every mistake shows. Uneven application or poor rhythm will immediately appear as streaks, overlaps, or patchiness.

A good result requires even application, working along the wood grain, one or two boards at a time from end to end, and maintaining a wet edge throughout the process.

With stains, technique makes all the difference.

A great result doesn’t happen by chance—it’s built on the right choices at every step. When you combine proper preparation, high-quality products, and the right application techniques, you get more than just a beautiful finish. You get long-term protection. And that means fewer repaints, less maintenance, and better value over time.
