NORSOK M-501 heavyweight corrosion protection

Our family of NORSOK M-501 approved coating systems is growing and thanks to the new, approved systems, you can now choose from an even more versatile range.

The NORSOK standard M-501 includes surface preparation and protective coatings for offshore installations and associated facilities. Coating system no. 1 in Annex A of NORSOK standard M-501 is used for the exteriors of equipment, vessels, piping and valves. Coatings accepted for system no.1 need to have passed ISO 20340-approved tests.

This cyclical test method is very stringent, with the standard process comprising three days of UV/condensation followed by three days of salt spray, with the test panels finally kept for one day at -20 °C. The total number of cycles is 25 (4,200 hours).

Teknos offers several coating systems that have passed this stringent, cyclical test.

New NORSOK M-501 approved coating systems

The test methods of coating system 7A comprise the above-mentioned cyclic test, and in addition, a 25-week seawater immersion and a cathodic disbondment test. The test methods of coating system 7B consist of a 25-week seawater immersion and a cathodic disbondment test.

The following coatings systems have been tested and approved according to NORSOK M-501 standard Edition 6:

Coating System no. 7A:
TEKNOMASTIC 80 PRIMER epoxy coating
3 x 200 μm
Carbon and stainless steel in the splash zone

Coating System no. 7B:
TEKNOMASTIC 80 PRIMER epoxy coating
2 x 175 μm
Submerged carbon and stainless steel ≤ 50 °C
