Fire Classifications and Coating Systems

K110 and K210 according to EN13501-2
The fire protection ability K is the ability of a wall or ceiling covering to provide for the material behind the covering protection against ignition, charring and other damage for a specified period of time.
DRF class INT1 and INT2
(Durability of Reaction to Fire Performance) for interior applications according to EN 16755
B-s1, d0 according to EN13501-1
Coated wood and wood-based products are assessed under European standard EN 13501-1 for spread of flame, ignitability, heat release, smoke production and flaming particles.

Fire Testing for Intumescent Paints for Wood
There are a number of tests assessing Reaction to Fire of coated wooden products. They consider areas such as wood species, density and thickness, to produce the classification.
EN 13501-1 assesses coated products’ Reaction to Fire and results in a classification for the coated wood or wood-based product. Download our guide 'Fire Test Classification Report EN 13501-1' below for more help.

Our Fire Retardant Coating Technology
Teknos fire retardant coating solutions have been developed in our dedicated Fire Laboratory. Not only do our Fire Research & Development Team develop the latest technology in intumescent coatings, they conduct in-house tests to ensure the highest effectiveness for reaction to fire.
The Teknos Fire Laboratory offers in-house testing to our manufacturing customers enabling them to gain indicative tests on their FR coated products before committing to the full certification testing programme.
Intumescent Coatings or Fire Impregnation
What’s the difference?
The advantage of intumescent fire coatings is that they are applied on the surface of the wood. This means that they are actively working to slow the spread of flame from the surface so that it takes longer to reach the substrate. Pressure impregnation treatments work from the inside outwards to slow the spread of flame.
Resistance to Fire or Reaction to Fire
What’s the difference?
Teknos FR coating solutions are tested for Reaction to Fire, meaning their contribution to the spread and development of a fire. Escape can take place before 'flashover' when a fire is established, so delaying the spread of a fire allows more time to escape. The exterior FR coating system is also tested for Resistance to Fire which covers how a fire moves through a building once it is established.
