How to keep your paint brushes going for years
How many times have you come back to an old paint brush and hated yourself for not cleaning it properly the last time you used it?! A congealed paint mess that causes the bristles to stick together usually results in said paint brush being put in the bin. Not hugely economical!
So this week we are giving you some tips on how to keep those paint brushes going for donkey’s years
After using oil based paints
Rule number one - Always clean a paint brush immediately after use.
Look at the back of the paint to follow proper cleaning solvent advice. Pour the correct solvent into a container and dip the brush into the liquid. Work thinner through the brush bristles, dipping up and down in container several times. Spin the paint brush into a waste area to remove excess thinner and then repeat process with a clean container and clean thinner.
After using water based paints
A mixture of warm water and mild soap is the best cleaning solution for water-based paint. Dip the paint brush into a soapy mixture, working the soap through the brush bristles. Then rinse the brushes with clear water. Go on to repeat the process if necessary. Always use a clean container with clean soapy water and follow with a clear water rinse. For stubborn water-based paints, try mineral spirits or lacquer thinner, followed by warm soapy water and a clear water rinse.
Tip: If you are wanting to keep a paint brush or roller useable for the next day without having to rigorously clean it, try wrapping it in cling film – it should keep the bristles fluid overnight and you can go on to some happy painting!
